This date doesn't particularly interest me. Still waiting for a box set release of April 1969, Ark and/or Avalon. This show is pretty lackluster.

I'd like to see them release some of the great "stream only" matrix shows that are here. But I ain't in charge.....

I'm surprised we didn't get any new & unheard material after all. Lemieux seems to be putting off his real "standout" '69 discovery for another day. Oh well, at least this will be an upgrade.
As far as missing reels, I keep hoping the rest of 2/12/69 will come out someday... That would be a treat.

What I remember about those shows, is that they are not some much barn burners, but interesting, though you might apply this to much of late 69 .
This does seem like Dave wanted to get this out, and the new reel allowed him to "finish some business" . I hope the hinted unheard 69 stuff is not just a musinerdstanding of what he said . I am glad it this and not the 87 ideas tossed about .
I wonder what from 12/11 he has chosen for the bonus disc ?

And then he goes on and on about a Weir scream in Mamu and called it one of the tightest versions. Huh? I dig this era as much as the next guy but after listening to it today i felt underwhelmed. I believe this period is pretty well represented. Summer and fall of 72 could use some polish. 9/28/72 comes to mind. Maybe a bonus disc from summer 73'-8/1 is a barn burner that could use a little work. Maybe we should get to pick!

Well we all have our feelings about different shows, and Dave certainly has his . I suspect that if any of us got placed in his seat, we would have the same "...why didn't he pick ..." responses . Except for the missing reel, I don't quite get this one, but maybe I will feel different when I hear it in it's new form .
With SSDD so recent, sadly, I don't think we will see more 72 right away . Now some early, to mid 73 , is relatively not covered . Something from the holes in the pre Keith 70-71 era , 84, 91 etc., but I do understand the argument that with only so many years in life , and God knows how long they will be able to keep putting these recording, the urgency of getting to the "Primal" shows, and not just the "interesting" ones .

I have the feeling BVD if we made the picks save a few like minded loons there would be mobs with torches and weaponry forming outside Rhino headquarters. As DD alluded to it is a very complicated task choosing a show for release and it is usually met with a 50/50 or say 60/40 approval/disapproval rate. This is Dave's tenth pick and I only agree with one choice that being 11/17/73.Being unheard I can see why volume 6 (12/20,12/21 and 2/2/70) was released and although the music outside of some of the bonus disc from volume 3 (10/22/71,bonus disc 10/21/71) is unimpressive I understand the release from a historic perspective. The seven other choices in my mind range from questionable to what the fuck.

I would heartily endorse a release of 9/28/72 which has a killer I Know You Rider,PITB and a monster,all-time Other One.A bonus disc from 8/1/73 containing the Dark Star->El Paso->Eyes of the World->Morning Dew with the stompin' Casey Jones to close it out would be a welcome addition to my collection.

I second the 9.28.72 proposal. Wait- I third it.

playing wise that is?

Was 12/11/69 the show with the "unusual Phil activity" in Dark Star and Other One that he mentioned in the liner notes of the earlier release? A bit confused.

I don't know. I hope not; it's better to have another unknown Dark Star (and completely unknown show) to look forward to.

I guess playing-wise this show is about on the same level as 11/8 and 12/20/69. This was an uneven period for the Dead, with generally very laid-back playing. (In the last week of December they start getting noticeably more energetic.) But the 11/8/69 second set, and the Alligator>Caution here, are two of my favorite sets from late '69.

12/30/69 is the only other show I could find where they played both Dark Star and Other One in this period, unless there is one completely absent from Deadbase.

I agree, that Caution from 12/12 might be the one from 69 that I pull out the most often. Well maybe tied with 2/11. Not that I don't love 11/8 and 2/28...among others...

12/30 is a show I hadn't considered before, but would love an upgrade of. There is missing material, and there could be an upgrade in there, but I'd assume the cuts probably still make it unreleasable in their eyes.

This is a tough release, because I like the show, but Lemieux really hyped up all this unheard stuff from all those returned reels, then drops the one show from the Thelma run that is probably the most complete and best quality of the run of what we already have. It feels like kindof a letdown when you look at it in those terms.

Dave did not seem his normal enthusiastic self while hyping this release.I can't for the life of me see why this show would be released. At one point he mentions how he generally goes on about the big jams during these chats and then proceeds to say almost nothing about the Alligator->drums->Alligator->Caution->feedback.He also says nothing about the content of the bonus disc other than it is from the 12/11 show which has nothing at all worthy of being released.

Yeah, I don't get this one at all. Terrible choice. Give me anything from the spring or even early summer over this. Oh well.
